The Around the Mountains Trail offers cyclists an opportunity to explore and discover some of New Zealand's hidden beauty and secluded rural settings at a relaxing pace.
The trail starts at Kingston and winds its way through Garston, Athol and Lumsden. It then tracks west towards Mossburn before meandering up to the Lake Mavora area, through the picturesque Von Valley, Mt Nicholas Station and concluding at Walter Peak Station on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
The trail is being built by the Southland District Council, in partnership with the Government's New Zealand Cycle Project.
The opening of the first stage of the trail, from Kingston to Mossburn, was held in November 2014.
Consent applications have been approved for a section beside the Oreti River. These have been appealed by Fish & Game and are before the Environment Court. View the application
