Southland District Council has adopted the Alcohol Control Bylaw 2015 which sets the establishment of Alcohol Free Areas.

A new Combined Local Alcohol Policy was adopted on 6 December 2019 and came into effect on 31 March 2020. The policy covers the areas of Southland District Council and Invercargill City Council.

The policy will help inform the decisions of the District Licensing Committees on alcohol licences, provide guidance on whether they should be granted and, if so, the conditions that could be imposed. A key policy included in the LAP is around the maximum trading hours allowed under each type of alcohol licences.
