Northern Southland, and in particular the Mossburn area, has seen the impacts of the dairy farming boom of the past few decades with the area having become popular for winter grazing.
Mossburn has a population of around 200 people. Industry in the town includes the Silver Fern Farms processing plant, deer farming, and dairying.
Overlooking the town is the White Hill Wind Farm, located 6km away, with 29 turbines that produce enough electricity each year to power around 28,000 average New Zealand homes.
