Balfour is a farming community and has a resident population of around 126 people. It is located in Northern Southland, nestled between the Hokonui Hills and the Mataura River.
The area was originally known as Longridge but was changed around 1888 due to confusion due to other areas with similar names. Industries have included farming, flax milling, coal mining, gold mining and limeworks.
