District Plan

The Southland District Plan is the primary document that manages land use and development within the Southland District. The Plan was made fully operative on 27 June, 2001 and is now being reviewed.

To see District Plan changes, please follow this link.

Council is in the process of reviewing its District Plan, while Environment Southland is also reviewing its Regional Policy Statement. Both Councils have decided to work together in the initial consultation stages of the two Plan reviews.

This collaborative approach has resulted in a series of 13 Issues and Options papers.

These papers are available online. Consultation on them was completed on July 31 2009. A Community Debrief paper is being worked on at the moment and will be available to the public in October. This initial consultation phase is the first opportunity for both Southland District Council and Environment Southland to engage with the wider community and stakeholders on resource management issues, and explore how second generation planning documents may address these issues.

Full papers, summaries and report cards can be downloaded from the link below. Papers are also available in hard copy and if requested can be obtained on CD. Please contact either Council.
